1. Body Shape

Short, stout, cylindrical body (compared to Shol which is longer).

Laterally compressed at the tail end.

2. Color

Olive green to brownish on the back.

Sides have distinct dark round spots/blotches (hence the name "punctata").

Belly is whitish.

3. Head & Mouth

Head broad and slightly flattened, snake-like appearance.

Mouth large with sharp teeth.

Eyes fairly big.

4. Size

Smaller compared to Shol.

Common size: 15–30 cm.

Can grow up to 45 cm (about 1 kg), rarely large
