Plays a major role in the economy of Bangladesh and eastern India.

1. Body Shape

Deep-bodied and laterally compressed.

Streamlined, with a pointed snout and forked tail.

2. Color

Silvery body with a bluish or greenish tinge on the back.

Scales are shiny, large, and easily shed.

3. Size

Typically 500 g – 1.5 kg.

Can grow up to 2.5–3 kg in rivers.

4. Head & Mouth

Small mouth without teeth.

Lower jaw projects slightly outward.
